Wait, before I respond any further, as it's been a few years since I've done a panel at AN: One is allowed to bring their own laptop for AV presentations in panels... Right? Maybe as a backup, but AN has their own laptops that are loaded with the presentation files (remember that the presentation needs to be submitted to and vetted by Fingers before the con), and those are the laptops you are supposed to be using for the presentation. Right, so that rule has changed since since I last did a panel in 2013 when the requirements were basically 'I NEED AV' and a projector was made available and that was it. Okay. Depending on how any vetting is done that could be pretty problematic if trying to do more than the tired Power Point presentation method or just lists of video clips.

I spoke to Fingers and it sounds like you don't have to worry about keeping video clips separate from the PowerPoint presentation.

I plan to panel for the 3rd time this year and what really helped was Google docs, emails, FB messenger and any power points and notes we compiled together we all each saved a copy just in case it didn't go through drop box. And because wifi isn't great, we ignored using links as part of our presentations. When I did the weapons panel, we brought weapons but we did not allow anyone to touch and when we finished, we immediately packed them away -- fortunately, we were clear with the props check to let them know our intentions and we were good to go.

So, in much more seriousness, I've been scheming up ways to better integrate AV elements into a panel. I work in film and VFX so part of me thinks 'I can do something really cool' but then again, I work in film and VFX so part of me thinks 'Everything breaks right when you don't need it to!' I feel that for a lot of panels, AV clips are usually integrated in a pretty clunky way, but that clunkyness brings with it a reasonable amount of reliability. "Blah black, talking point, blah blah. And this clip is an example of blah talking point." *everyone pauses while someone presses play on a laptop and the clip begins play* Admittedly, I've only seen this for folks showing a clip of something short and funny, but GIFs may potentially be an option? (Given what you're describing though, it's probably not an option )

Hi everyone. I've been doing panel presentations at Youmacon in Detroit, Anime Expo in Los Angeles and Anime Central in Chicago for several years, and am interested in applying to present at Anime North this year.
But I've never even attended Anime North, and it looks like things are done differently here than what I'm familiar with.
I've put my name on the "BOOOONG" mailing list, and I dug around a bit here on the forum for additional information. Are there any specific places I ought to look, or links I ought to know about in order to more effectively apply for presenting?
Thanks for any suggestions you may have!

Registration isn't open yet, so registration instructions and the FAQ haven't been posted yet. This thread is only for recruitment to The Panel Panel and tips to be considered for a panelists guide, so both of our posts will be deleted. There is a generic 2018 Panel thread where you can repost your question.

See, the crux of that article is that the "these panels suck" crowd amount to little more than myopic critics who have nothing to offer, other than their disdain. If you are unable to articulate why a thing is bad, only that it is bad, then what hope is there in addressing the concern?
Here are some examples which so believe would contribute to panel attendees not enjoying the panels they attended:
* This isn't what I was expecting; the panel content is at odds with the title of the panel, or goes in a direction the attendee isn't interested in.
*You didn't talk about the thing I wanted to talk about; panel didn't cover the content they were particularly interested in.
*Panelists don't engage with audience
*Panelsists don't engage with audience because they are bickering instead of having a discussion
These are for those who actually attend panels, by and large the most popular criticism of those who don't attend panels is "there aren't any interesting panels" which is generally followed up with "because all the panels I would have attended were replaced with non-anime, unrelated, people who respect others, etc., content."

if you have a tablet, having it open to the anime's wiki can be a big help- nothing worse than waisting time trying to remember that one obscure characters name that no sane person would think to include in their notes.
the biggest thing i can think of, which was touched upon in the OP, is to not just ask the audience questions with adding/commenting/following up what the audience has said. As the panelist, you're supposed to be the expert, the audience is asking you for your opinion on their point, not to just be basically a person with a mic taking comments from a crowd. I've seen this happen so many times, and it completely shuts down discussion because someone says something and you want to hear more about that point and what people think about it, but then the panel just nods and takes the next person with a raised hand from the crowd.
An easy way to break the ice at the beginning is to just go down the panel line introducing each person with who are you, how you got into this topic, what about this topic made it really stick with you so much that you're willing to do a panel on it. then it's good to keep a fairly loose outline of things you want to cover, but also prepare for some things getting bumped and a "if we have extra time do this" contingency.

Hey this may sound basic but is bringing a speaker to play lyric-less theme music to a panel (while people are being seated) be allowed or nah?

Hey this may sound basic but is bringing a speaker to play lyric-less theme music to a panel (while people are being seated) be allowed or nah? All A/V must be screened and you are not permitted to bring your own equipment, which is why the panel application includes A/V fields.
