Hey folks! Last year I created and moderated this panel and it was very successful. I have two people, including me already for this years, but I’d love to know if any of you would be interested in being part of what is a very interesting topic. I’d prefer for you to be disabled, mentally ill or neurodiverse, as these identities are important to represent accurately during the panel. Thanks for reading!

I've been very curious about this panel, as I meant to go last year, but couldn't make it. If I register, I want to ask; do you recommend having seen a lot of "mental illness in anime" as a prerequisite? I ask because I can't say I've seen much, other than maybe Welcome to the NHK. The reason why this panel piques my interest is because you mentioned about being mentally ill, etc. I suffer from OCD, anxiety and depression, so maybe I can at least talk about my experiences.

Are you going to discuss how Japanese people view and deal with disability and mental illness?
I'm not not sure where this comes from, but I remembers the Japanese being ooen about certain mental illnesses and taking medicine to help, but its don't get the vibe that they are as accepting as Norrh Americans, and we still heavily stigmatize mental illness.

We had a lot to discuss last year because it seemed like mental illness was used as a plot point in a lot of anime’s, though not always accurately. We also talked about mangaka and anime creators who suffered from depression and how that influenced their works! And I think your unique experiences would definitely help influence your thoughts during the panel.

Last year we discussed characters in anime who had disabilities and or mental illnesses in anime and whether they were well portrayed, stereotypes, who we related to etc. Some people made comments about the creators of anime and manga and their mental health experiences, but it was more focused on animes themselves.

Okay. Having an understanding of how disability and mental illness are viewed and treated in Japan is good groundwork to understanding its anime portrayal. I do suggest researching it a bit.
We wouldn't have Evangelion without mental illness, and its one of the most influential anime since the 90s.

I think I should brush up a bit though on anime to sort of familiarize myself with more than just Welcome to the NHK. Someone mentioned Evangelion; if I could watch that, maybe I can bring more to the panel.

Either way, I’d love for you to sign up if you haven’t yet!

What about Watamote and other series where the characters have social anxiety or hikikomori?

What about Watamote and other series where the characters have social anxiety or hikikomori? . That works too! We discussed all kinds of anime last year. We talked about YOI in terms of anxiety.

Hey there. I've just registered also. I am neurodiverse (autistic) and well versed in the topic of disability rights and representation. My anime knowledge is a tad limited, but I believe I can help analyse and shed light on important issues.
