Hey friends, we've taken steps to revise Ye Olde LAQ and come up with a digest of the top need-to-know answers and info.
Panels FAQ & Guidelines
Revision 3.0.3, You Can (Not) Revise - Last Updated: 2020-02-28
Q: What is a Panel?
A: Panels are where fans, experts, and others come together to talk about anime and its adjacent interests. There are generally three kinds of panels:
Q: Do I have to register to attend a panel?
A: Not for the specific panel, no. All you need is an Anime North badge (weekend or for the appropriate day). Some workshops may charge a participation fee for materials, etc, which will be clearly indicated in your programme guide.
Q: How do I sign up to run or be a part of a Panel?
A: Use anpanels.com and register there. You will need an account and to submit a panel idea. Submission does not equate approval.
Q: How do I find other people to help me run a panel?
A: There are two main ways: First, you can assemble a team of panelists to help you with the discussion. Each person involved must be able to contribute to the conversation. Someone who doesn’t contribute cannot be considered a panelist.
Second, if your panel has been sitting for a bit or is part of a popular topic, you may be asked to come onboard with others. As such, an email discussion will be started between parties with similar submitted panels. Please participate accordingly, or bow out if you’d prefer not to.
Q: I need help! How can I get senpai to notice me?
A: If, by senpai, you mean the Panels staff, either email us directly at panels [at] animenorth [dot] com or post in these official forums with your question. We’ll do our best to help. Please allow for at least 48 hours for a reply. Note that the waiting period goes up as we get closer to the con due to volume of requests. We also take quick questions via Discord, but it's less likely to get answered if no one's online.
Q: What do I need to do on the weekend of the convention?
A: Pick up your badge from Registration located in the Toronto Congress Centre (north side of Dixon Rd), and then come to the Panels Office located in the Delta Hotel on the south side. We’ll be set up near the staircase that leads up to the ballrooms. From there, we’ll sign you in and give you the necessary items for participating.
We strongly suggest showing up to the Panels Office to collect your paperwork at least an hour before your panel starts in case there are any foul-ups with the paperwork, or something needs fixing.
Q: What if I have a problem during the convention?
A: Find a Panels staffer and tell them about your issue. If you cannot immediately find Panels staff, come down to the Panels Office located near the stairs in the Delta and there should be someone there to help you. If you will be late for a panel or you cannot find a staffer to assist you, please email panels [at] animenorth [dot] com with a subject line using “ATTN: URGENT” and your panel name. You may also call the number on your Purple Sheet to reach Fingers directly.
Q: I want to use a presentation during my panel. How do?
A: If you have not run a panel before at Anime North, your presentation materials, including any video clips, slideshows, audio recordings, etc, have to be approved by our department ahead of time. Please upload them to Dropbox and send us the link when submitting the project. Outlines and mockups are fine for the purposes of early planning. After that, all approved material is moved into our Panels Dropbox and made available on the laptops supplied at the convention.
If you HAVE run a panel for us before, you will need to still submit an overview/mockup for approval. After that, pending explicit approval, you may be allowed to bring your own USB media at the discretion of the Panels Dept Coordinators. It must work via easily accessible, free software like PowerPoint Viewer or VLC, nothing proprietary. USB sticks must be formatted in FAT or exFAT (no HFS+/NTFS or whatever), and any laptops must have an HDMI port (anything else will require you to supply the appropriate dongle to HDMI).
Q: Can I reserve seats for my friends in my panel?
A: No, panels work via at-the-door lineup and we do not generally make exceptions for anyone. Staff are instructed to clear the room between panels so the audience-in-waiting gets a fair shot at enjoying content. Tell your friends to line up early and that is generally their best shot.
Q: What reimbursements are provided for doing panels?
A: Generally for 1-2 panels you get some swag, 3/4 gets upgraded swag, and 5+ gets badge reimbursement. We do not offer partial reimbursement at this time.
Q: Can I do a cooking, makeup, cosplay, or prop-making panel?
A: Depending on which kind, possibly! We do generally handle various cosplay and prop-making panels. If it involves messy substances and audiences building or making something, chances are it's a Workshop and needs to be approved via their process. A warning that cooking workshops are the least likely to get approved due to the effort involved in approvals.
Q: When signing up for a panel, should I use the Japanese or English name of the anime/game/etc?
A: If a property has been licensed and has an official English title, use that. If it's unlicensed or only a Japanese (or non-English) title is available, use the romanization of that.
e.g: We would use "Attack on Titan" at all times rather than "Shingeki no Kyojin", as it is both the official licensed title and more accessible for attendees to use when finding content.
Q: Can I use/show a video during my panel?
A: Yes, we generally allow videos to be used as part of your presentation/visual aids. However, there are some rules around these that we would ask you to observe:
Videos created by third parties (i.e: Not you) may only be shown in part during your panel unless you have the express permission of the rights holder or the Panel Coordinators to do otherwise. Treat it like using a quotation in an essay -- a clip of the relevant bit to reinforce your point or explanation.
Showing a video should be in support of your presentation or discussion, and not replace vital information that you yourself should be presenting.
Further, some material may constitute a violation of copyright to be shown without permission from the rights holder and would not be allowed on that basis.
Q: What is a "Question Thread" on the forums?
A: Question Threads are for panels where the questions have to be submitted in advance due to the panel's format. We only allow for a small number of these per year, but if you require it for your idea, let us know and we'll see what can be done.

Q: What is a Panel?
A: Panels are where fans, experts, and others come together to talk about anime and its adjacent interests. There are generally three kinds of panels:
- Discussion Panel - Usually 4 people, little to no A/V, and works as a roundtable discussion with or without audience input.
- Presentation Panel - Usually 1-3 people with A/V if desired. Has a scripted or prepared portion for demonstration.
- Workshop Panel - Usually 1-4 people with a practical, hands-on tutorial of some kind with audience participation.
Q: Do I have to register to attend a panel?
A: Not for the specific panel, no. All you need is an Anime North badge (weekend or for the appropriate day). Some workshops may charge a participation fee for materials, etc, which will be clearly indicated in your programme guide.

Guidelines
- PANELISTS: Get your Purple Paper signed by your fellow panelists. This tells us you showed up and lets you get your swag after you’re finished all your content. Swag is generally handed out on Sunday after 3pm. If you’ll only be attending for a specific day, please let us know ahead of time.
- To remain in good standing, you must show up to your panels and participate. If someone on your panel(s) has not done this, please let us know and we will handle the matter internally.
- Use the A/V provided. If the A/V has any problems, please contact the nearest staffer. Do not attempt repairs as you may further damage or complicate the matter.
- No use of bigoted language, topics, or visuals at your panel except to discuss them in negative terms. Panels with contentious material, even if approved, will be monitored for good behaviour.
- Don’t harass the audience, don’t harass the panelists. Trolling and aggressive behaviour are not tolerated in panels. If either occurs, please let our staff know immediately and we will step in to assess the issue.
- Have a plan. Discuss your panel with your co-panelists and come up with a plan. It can be a simple set of notes so you all keep on track, a speaking order, etc. Panels are generally about collaboration.
- Show up 15 minutes early. There is a break between each panel to allow the panelists to set up and settle in. This is an opportune time to meet anyone you haven’t yet in person, fix any last-minute problems, etc.
- Don’t run over time. With very few exceptions, panels run 1 hour (60 minutes). You will be given a friendly 10 minute and 5 minute warning by the staff to wrap up, and will be expected to finish on time before the staff have to switch over the room.
- All audience members and panelists must have Anime North badges. No one gets in without one, regardless of if they are an assistant, a parent, etc. We will ask for your badges at the door to check.
- Be excellent to each other! Good behaviour goes a long way.
