As a question to Nominoichi sellers, what are your thoughts on the matter? Are you guys welcome to haggling? 3 for $10 or something similar? Or are you simply against the idea -- here's my price, deal with it? I know last year I tried to haggle, sometimes with more favourable results, sometimes less so. I tried to make people reasonable offers -- if I'm buying 20 manga from you, I'm not interested in paying $100 dollars, I'd much rather pay $75-80 for it. Stuck on the $5 price? Are you willing to throw in that [phone strap/poster/random item that I find cute]? Let me know your thoughts.

really it depends on the item, if it's something a little more valued the rate of haggle goes down quite a bit!

Well, let's see from my bought stuff last year: I'd be more likely to pay what it's listed for Blood+ or Monster than for Enmusu or Teru Teru Shonen.
The only time I make actual low ball offers is when I'm running low on cash, or last 30 minutes of Nominoichi, whichever comes first. Again, my low balls aren't unreasonable, but they aren't as favourable my haggling offers. Nothing to lose but the remainder of my Nominoichi fund.

When I was selling at a different, smaller con, my policy was no haggling because while I wanted to get rid of my stuff, I also wanted to be able to make back as much money I had spent on those things as possible. Mental math also isn't my forte, so if people are throwing numbers at me I need some time to either think it out or whip out my calculator, and while I know the majority of people are not out to swindle sellers, I don't really want to take my chances (I'm a terribly jaded person, hahaha).
This time around I'm going to be a bit more lenient, but it'll really depend on what's being haggled.

As long as the seller doesn't make their prices things like $7, where you'd end up carrying loose change (let's be honest here, who wants to have a pocket full of cumbersome change at a con?) there shouldn't be any need to haggle other than when you're bundling things together.

The problem with that is that sometimes rounding up prices the item more than what it's worth, and rounding down isn't really enough. While pricing things in multiples of five is easier math and change-wise, it's not always feasible or logical.

From what ive seen from people haggling on the trends I think its better to throw in a freebi or to it makes both sides happy and insures that people dont really have a reason to haggle which in turn saves u more money than throwing in one manga as a freebie

Personally I think it depends on the person. Like when items are obviously quite cheap already, it could annoy the sellers that you're still trying to haggle. However, because they are cheap, sometimes it indicates they want to get rid of it and wouldn't mind a, but more haggling. I think the rule is to make an offer and if they turn it down without counter offer, don't insist.

I always decide on a price I think is fair then I decide what my top number is on the item. Then I make a low ball offer and we go from there. If they are stuck on a price that's not worth it i let it go if they fall in my price range we make a deal.

usually it's just if the last digit of the total is 1-3 i try to haggle to 0 (ex. 23 to 20, ye?) if the last digit is 6-8 haggle to 5, haggling to 0 with the last digit 4 or to 5 with last digit 9 i usually wouldnt do unless i bought quite a lot :S

I'm welcome to haggling as long as it's not ridiculous, or if it's for an item I know will sell at the price I have set it at.
At the end of the night though I haggle like mad to get rid of everything.

Single items, I don't usually haggle unless the price is pretty high ($50+ range). Since you'd usually haggle prices down by at least $5, I figure asking for more than 10% off for a single item is a bit much.
As a rule for haggling though, the room for haggling and price reduction increases with the volume of sales. It's a combination between "thanks for buying lots of stuff" and the "now I don't have to sell as much" factor.

As a rule for haggling though, the room for haggling and price reduction increases with the volume of sales. It's a combination between "thanks for buying lots of stuff" and the "now I don't have to sell as much" factor. Most of my stuff will be priced very fairly and I doubt people would feel any need to haggle the prices down. Just looking to clear up a lot of shelf space, so if they buy multiple things, I'll gladly lower the price a bit or toss in freebie manga and/or anime (depending on how much they buy). I do, however, plan on pricing my figures, um, rather "aggressively" at the start. Most of them will not be found at any other nominoichi or dealer table at Anime North, so there won't be any price competition for them too. Not that I'm going to over-price them, but I won't be looking to just dump them for a fraction of the retail price. I love 'em and will be just as happy if they don't sell and find their way back in my display cases ^^. As we all know, con-goers are plagued by the *impulse buy* and I need the money if I can get it, so I'll keep the ticket prices a bit higher - with room to haggle - and eventually lower them if they don't already sell in the first hour or two.
